Holistic Education
Principles, Perspectives, and Practices

Edited by Carol Flake

Full electronic book on CD-ROM $14.95

Holistic Education: Principles, Perspectives, and Practices traces its roots to a remarkable meeting of holistic educators in Chicago in 1990, where the current state of American education was examined and a united call for action, "The Chicago Statement," was adopted. This statement led to the establishment of GATE (the Global Alliance for Transforming Education) and a 1991 conference in Colorado that produced Education 2000: A Holistic Perspective. An eloquent statement of what education could — and should &mdash be, Education 2000 also sketched some of the linkages and applications implicit in holistic theory.

This book is a continuation and expansion of the vital work of educational renewal. Itself a collaborative effort of scores of holistic practitioners, Holistic Education builds on Education 2000 and explores in greater depth the theoretical foundations of its ten principles. It offers a host of real-world applications that creative teachers can use as stimuli in developing curricula that meet the needs of their own students as they face an ever-changing, ever-challenging world.

The ten principles explored in this volume are:

  • Educating for Human Development
  • Honoring Students as Individuals
  • The Central Role of Experience
  • Holistic Education
  • New Role of Educators
  • Freedom of Choice
  • Educating for a Participatory Democracy
  • Educating for Cultural Diversity and Global Citizenship
  • Educating for Earth Literacy
  • Spirituality and Education
